This week, Pfizer (Pfizer Inc) won a $300 million money award for its $1.2 billion anti-impotence drug Viagra (sildenafil).
A new study shows Pfizer's anti-impotence pill will get a much-needed nod from the Food and Drug Administration as the first to treat impotence in women. That drug is Viagra's female counterpart.
The study, called "The Women's Health Initiative," is being conducted by the San Diego County Department of Public Health, University of California, San Diego, and San Diego Medical Center.
Pfizer is the company behind the study, but it hasn't yet made a decision about whether the drug will be available to treat women.
"We know the science behind the drug, but we haven't been able to determine whether it is safe or effective," said Jim Davis, director of the California Health Plan for Women. "We need to see if the drug is more effective than Viagra."
Viagra is a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction in men. Pfizer marketed the drug for use in women. Pfizer spokeswoman Kristi Leung said the study was not part of the Pfizer drug program.
The Viagra study involved a group of 30,000 women, including 19 women with erectile dysfunction. Viagra works in a similar way to Cialis, but it is taken by men only.
The study found that women taking the drug had an increased risk of a heart attack and stroke. The women had a 50% greater chance of getting the heart disease side effects of Viagra, compared with the men taking Cialis.
The study is being conducted by the University of California at San Diego's Center for Sexual Medicine.
The study looked at data from nearly 30,000 women, including 19 women with erectile dysfunction. The researchers used a population-based study of the general American population, as well as data from the Women's Health Initiative study, which looked at nearly 1 in 10,000 women.
Viagra was first approved by the FDA in 1998.
The drug was developed by Pfizer Inc. in response to an FDA advisory committee meeting and was approved by the drug's manufacturer, Eli Lilly & Company, in May 2003. Pfizer's drug was later approved for use in women.
A new study found that the drug's benefits outweighed its risks.
"We know that the benefits of Viagra outweigh the risks of its use in treating certain conditions in women," said Dr. Irwin Goldstein, lead investigator for the new study. "We don't want to discourage women from using the drug for their fertility. We want women to have access to a treatment that works."
Viagra can cause chest pain, dizziness and nausea, though these are less common than the side effects of Viagra, the researchers said.
The study was conducted by researchers from the University of California at San Diego and the San Diego Medical Center.
Davis said the drug is "an important part of the overall health care system in the United States."
Viagra is a type of medicine called a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor, or PDE5, or "PDE5."It works by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis, allowing blood to flow into the penis when you get sexually excited.
Viagra does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases, such as HIV and gonorrhea, but may be considered for people who do have these diseases. But it may be used in people who have conditions that the drug could not treat.
According to the National Institutes of Health, some people with erectile dysfunction have a 20% chance of getting a heart attack or a stroke. That's because Viagra prevents a person from having an erection until the heart beats up.
Dr. Daniel Levinson, director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, said in an interview that the drug's benefits outweigh its risks in men with a history of heart disease.
"I would say it's more effective in women than it is in men, but still in the same group of people," he said.
Robert Nisbet, a Pfizer spokesman, said that the study "does not rule out other causes of the side effects" of the drug.
"There are other potential drug interactions with Viagra, which may influence Viagra's efficacy," he said.
William Shays, a Pfizer spokesman, declined to comment on the drug.

The drug maker Pfizer Inc. is suing the Food and Drug Administration over claims that it did not comply with a federal court ruling requiring that patients take the drug without first verifying the identity of the person who took it.
FDA is seeking an order from the court to prevent the pharmaceutical company from approving its unapproved drug, which contains the active ingredient sildenafil citrate, which Pfizer said is used to treat erectile dysfunction.
The suit is related to the FDA’s decision in January that more than 25 million prescriptions for sildenafil and tadalafil, which are taken every day, were not approved in the United States.
“The FDA’s decision has been based upon a showing that the drug does not meet the requirements of Section 1325(a) of the Food and Drug Act of 1974,” said U. S. District Judge Rebecca Doherty in a news release.
The complaint alleges that FDA failed to comply with a requirement for physicians to conduct an independent review of the medical records to determine if any of the doctors were aware of the risk of heart attacks and other serious side effects when taking sildenafil.
Sildenafil is a prescription drug used to treat erectile dysfunction and is sold under the brand name Viagra. It is available in the United States as a prescription drug and has also been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for medical use.
Pfizer has also been accused of misleading consumers and drug companies about the drug’s safety. It also has said that it was aware of the potential risks associated with sildenafil but is now confident that it has not misstated its clinical data.
The suit was filed by lawyers representing plaintiffs’ attorneys in the case.
The company was also ordered to submit the company’s full financial and other information to the FDA before making the move.
Sildenafil is used to treat erectile dysfunction and can be used by men who have been sexually aroused.
The FDA said in its complaint that it had reviewed Pfizer’s drug, which is marketed under the brand name Viagra, and had determined that sildenafil is not the drug’s approved use to treat erectile dysfunction.
It also said that it had not received any reports of heart attacks or other serious side effects of the drug and had no information about the risk of heart attack or other serious side effects.
In a statement to the news release, Pfizer said: “Pfizer continues to be committed to the safety and effectiveness of this medication and to the regulatory and safety standards established by the FDA to prevent harmful side effects from occurring.”

The suit is related to the case involving the FDA’s decision to require that Pfizer disclose the company’s medical information about the drug sildenafil. The suit is related to the FDA’s decision that the company should have completed an independent review of the medical records to determine if there was anything in the company’s medical records that indicated that sildenafil had not been approved.
